Substance Abuse

Face of Addiction

"I won't get addicted."

"I'm just experimenting."

"Drugs help me cope with the pressure of [fill in the blank]."

According to the website, Teen Drug Abuse, 20 percent of 8th-graders report they have tried marijuana and 28 percent of teens know a classmate or friend who has used ecstacy. Teen Drug Abuse also reports that alcohol kills 6 1/2 times more than do illicit drugs. According to the National Institute for Justices Arrestee & Drug Monitoring System's drug testing program, 66 percent of underage male arrestees tested positive for marijuana use.

Through your research for this project and by learning about your classmates' projects, you will learn more about the harmful effects of drug use.

Substance Abuse Research

You and your class members will be researching the harmful effects of drug abuse in preparation for writing a persuasive paper that will inform and persuade your peers about the harmful effects of drug use.

Print materials:
The library has non-fiction and reference books on drugs and substance abuse. These books are located in the Dewey range in the non-fiction section of the library. Use the card catalog to locate the specific call number of the book.
On-line Databases:
Facts-on-File, Grolier and Infotrac databases can provide you with valuable information on your topic. Conduct a search using key words. (See your librarian for passwords.)
